RALEIGH, N.C. — Gov. Roy Cooper on Friday announced a reward for information leading to an arrest in the 2017 death of a U.S. Army specialist.
Cooper said a reward of up to $5,000 is being offered for any information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person who fatally shot U.S. Army Specialist Jose Melendez on Nov. 29, 2017.

Melendez, 31, had met friends in Raleigh while he was on leave and had volunteered to be the designated driver for the group before returning to duty at Fort Bragg.

He was shot while walking to his car in the 2200 block of Raven Road. A 911 caller reported seeing someone run into the woods following the incident.

A $15,000 reward had already been offered in the case, bringing the total reward for an arrest to $20,000.

The family has been working to keep Melendez’s case in the public eye and attended a vigil to honor victims of violence earlier this month.

Anybody with information is asked to call Raleigh Crime Stoppers at 919-662-4500.
