RALEIGH, N.C. — Vehicles that are at least 20 years old soon won't need to undergo an annual emissions test," state officials said this week.

Any vehicle 1999 model year or older will be exempt from the inspection starting Dec. 1. Next December, that will roll over to 2000 model year vehicles and older.

By law, all vehicles must pass an annual safety inspection before they can be registered in North Carolina or the registration renewed. Emissions checks are required in 22 counties statewide: Alamance, Buncombe, Cabarrus, Cumberland, Davidson, Durham, Forsyth, Franklin, Gaston, Guilford, Iredell, Johnston, Lee, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, New Hanover, Onslow, Randolph, Rockingham, Rowan, Union and Wake.

A series of changes to state regulations passed in May 2017 allows the emissions exemptions for older vehicles. The change was later approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after regulators noted that it wouldn't adversely affect North Carolina's efforts to improve air quality.
