Durham, N.C. — Gonza Tacos y Tequila has permanently closed its Durham location on Fernway Avenue.
"We have loved being in Durham over the past five years, and this is not an announcement we anticipated making when we temporarily closed March 16, due to the Governor’s COVID-19 dine-in restrictions. However, our lease was up for renewal, and the revised lease terms were not something we could commit to given the uncertain times we find ourselves in," owners said via a press release.
Owners say they are open to a new Durham space if the conditions are right.
“We are very thankful to the Durham community for their love and support over the past five years.” co-owner Gonza Salamanca said. “To say we were disappointed at the lack of flexibility, and proposed rent increase by the landlord, would be an understatement,”
The restaurant's location at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park will remain open. Gonza Tacos y Tequila also has locations in Cary, north Raleigh, Wake Forest and downtown Raleigh. The Cary and north Raleigh locations are open for take-out Tuesday through Sunday 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
