Andre Knight is a ward 1 councilman in Rocky Mount. He is also the chapter president for the local NAACP. Mr Knight is rather well known in RM and if you have ever attended a city council meeting you know why. He is always the outspoken one that makes finding a resolution to problems darn near impossible. Race is his favorite card to use when things are not going his way.
Mr. Knight is now accused of becoming verbally/physically abusive toward both Teresa and Mattie Hinton during an NAACP planning meeting at the Opportunities Industrialization Center, eventually shoving a table into Mattie Hinton’s chest and attacking Teresa Hinton.
“Andre started to fight (Teresa Hinton) and would not stop when Dorothy Dickens and I tried to stop him,” the letter states. “When this incident occurred, there was another group meeting in another room. When they heard Andre hollowing (sic), they came over and tried to stop Andre, to no avail.”
In December, a 70-year-old man accused Knight of shoving him into his motorized scooter following a tense public meeting on annexation. An N.C. District Court judge dismissed the allegation two months later.
In 2006, a member of the Edgecombe County Democratic Party successfully challenged Knight’s residency with the county elections board, raising questions in the process about Knight’s seat on City Council. The N.C. Court of Appeals later ruled in Knight’s favor, overturning the challenge. This was because Knight was representing a ward in which he did not reside in at the time of election.
So be proud Mr. Knight- us fellow RM citizens are of you. From pushing a 70 year old man, to attacking two women- you have made us proud. Keep up the good work!
