A golf cart driver and a child were killed in a crash Monday night in Iredell County.

STATESVILLE, N.C. — A golf cart driver and a child were killed in a crash Monday night in Iredell County.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol responded to a crash on Fort Dobbs Road near Dobbs Drive after 9:30 p.m.

According to Highway Patrol, a 2009 Honda Accord traveling west on Ford Dobbs Road crossed the center line and collided head-on with a golf cart that was traveling east.

The driver of the golf cart, Michael Shane Marlowe, 39, of Statesville, and a 5-year-old passenger, Bentley Marlowe, both died at the scene.

Four other people riding on the golf cart, ages 2, 13, 16 and 26, were critically injured and transported by medical helicopters to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte and Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The driver of the Honda, Austin Ray Harmon, 23, of Statesville, was not injured. Harmon was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, two counts of felony death by vehicle, and three counts of felony serious injury by vehicle.

Fort Dobbs Road was closed for seven hours during an investigation. The investigation is ongoing.
