GOLDSBORO, N.C. — A Goldsboro man was arrested on charges that he set fire to a home early Wednesday, according to the Wayne County Sheriff's Office.

Capt. Tom Effler said that two residents of Colonial Court said that Benny Cosby Gardner Jr., 36, borrowed gas from them around 1:30 a.m., then walked behind another home.

Effler said that the residents saw smoke coming from that home a few minutes later. They called 911 and put out the fire before crews arrived.

The occupants were home at the time, and no one was  injured, Effler said. Damage was contained to vinyl siding and a melted garden hose.

Gardner was arrested later Wednesday and charged with second-degree arson. He was placed in the Wayne County jail under a $5,000 secured bond.

Gardner has convictions for breaking-and-entering and possession of stolen goods dating from the 1990s and early 2000s, according to state Department of Correction records.
