Goldsboro man charged with murder, child abuse after 4-year-old girl dies, 5-year-old injured

Goldsboro police arrested Umoja Jihad Bryant on charges of child abuse and murder Friday morning after a 4-year-old girl died in the emergency room of UNC Health Wayne hospital.

GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Goldsboro police arrested Umoja Jihad Bryant on charges of child abuse and murder Friday morning after a 4-year-old girl died in the emergency room of UNC Health Wayne hospital.

Officers were called to the hospital to investigate the child's death and, in the course of that investigation, found a second victim, a 5-year-old boy with multiple injuries.

The two children lived in the same home, but police did not say whether they were siblings or what their relationship was to Bryant.

Bryant, 32, of Seventh Street, is charged with first-degree murder and child abuse in connection with the death of the girl and child abuse in connection with the boy's injuries. He remains in jail with no bond.

Bryant's first court appearance is set for 1:30 p.m. Monday.
