Goldsboro family targeted with racist, hate speech

The family's mother believes they were targeted because her 14-year-old daughter, who is white, currently has a black boyfriend.

Amanda Miller said she still can't believe the hate she woke up to last Thursday.

"And when you walk out, all you see is a swastika and you're like, 'Oh my gosh, what just happened?'" she said.

One of the family's van was covered with spray paint that had expletives and the N-word.

The family's other SUV, a 2018 model that was recently bought and financed, was sprayed with racist language.

"They're estimating (the damage) at $17,000," Miller said. "We've only made four payments. And we owe $25,000."

Miller knows the target is her daughter, Brianna, who's had African-American boyfriends in the past.

She said her daughter has faced social media bullying in the past, but the family never expected that to translate into anything offline.

"That's mean," Miller said. "To a 14 year old, that's awful."

Wayne County investigators are now scouring social media and phone records looking for clues. They are requesting that anyone with information come forward.

Miller's daughter was out of town when the incident occurred last week, but her mother is worried about what may happen when she returns to school.

"I'm worried about her going back to school, because I don't know what's going to happen to her at school," Miller said.

Miller says neighbors have come by to offer their support in the face of racism.

She said she hopes the perpetrator is caught and people in the community will learn to be more tolerant.

"I just hope that people kind of just stop," she said. "They need to look at this and say this has gone too far. This has to stop."
