Giving thanks for health, research: Thousands attend Triangle Race for the Cure

Thousands of people attended the Triangle Race for the Cure on Saturday morning to raise money for the Susan G. Komen NC Triangle to the Coast.

MORRISVILLE, N.C. — Thousands of people attended the Triangle Race for the Cure on Saturday morning to raise money for the Susan G. Komen NC Triangle to the Coast.

The money goes toward providing breast health services like mammograms and funding research toward better treatment. The ultimate goal is finding a cure for breast cancer.

Saturday’s race was the organization’s 23rd annual event.

It included two races: a timed, competitive 5K and a recreational run/walk.

Omar Abdul Rahman was the competitive race’s first male finisher, and Cara Musumeci was the first female finisher.

A dog named Lydia was the first canine finisher.

The event also included local food trucks, breweries and cideries, a Family Fun Zone, a Zumba warmup and survivor celebration.

One woman told WRAL’s Jeff Hogan and Joe Fisher that she tears up during the survivor celebration.

“My heart beats until it’s just coming out of my chest,” she said. “But it’s really, really thrilling that Komen does so much work that benefits all of us. We thank God for them, and we thank God for our health.”

Komen NCTC is based in Morrisville and serves 29 countries in central and eastern North Carolina.
