Posted — UpdatedUsually, Girls on the Run of the Triangle would be gearing up for its big culminating event — a 5K where participants, all girls in third to eighth grade, would wrap up the season and celebrate their hard work.
But, during a pandemic, in-person sessions and races can't happen. And that means the Girls on the Run annual spring 5K has gone virtual.
Girls on the Run participants and any community member across the Triangle are invited to participate in the virtual event at any point between April 25 and May 25. More than 900 girls usually participate in the program in the Triangle each fall and spring. This spring when schools closed, the program started sending at-home activities to more than 1,000 families with participating girls.
“Our spring 5k marks an exciting end to the season. When teams run, walk or skip across the finish line they realize they’re capable of achieving anything. Our girls and their volunteer coaches have been looking forward to this event and we regret not being able to celebrate the high fives, smiles and successes together, so we’re excited to offer this virtual option,” said Meg Pomerantz, executive director, in a press release.
To participate in the virtual 5K, you can sign up on the Girls on the Run website and then run, bike, walk, roll or otherwise move along a 5K — or 3.1 mile — route of your choosing between April 25 to May 25.
