DURHAM, N.C. — Firefighters on Monday identified the person killed in a Durham house fire over the weekend as 12-year-old Destiny Ledwell.

She and five others were inside the home in the 2400 block of Nebo Street when it caught fire at about 7:15 a.m. Sunday, Deputy Chief of the Durham Fire Department Dan Curia said.

Tim Bothe, director of emergency services for the Durham Red Cross, said one person was treated for smoke inhalation and had been released from the hospital. The Red Cross was providing financial and emotional support to the family.

The house sustained smoke and fire damage.

Bothe said the fire was initially detected by a young man in the family, who smelled smoke and tried to warn the others.
