WAKE FOREST, N.C. — A 6-year-old girl drowned Sunday afternoon in a neighborhood swimming pool a week after arriving from Africa to live with her aunt and uncle, police said.

Mariama Bah, who came to the Triangle from Sierra Leone, was found unconscious in the shallow end of the Bowling Green subdivision swimming pool at about 6:30 p.m., police said. Witnesses told investigators that they had seen her playing with two of her cousins just before someone noticed her at the pool’s bottom.

Adults at the scene administered CPR until emergency personnel arrived, and the girl was taken to WakeMed North Healthplex in Raleigh. She died at the hospital about an hour later.

About 10 to 15 people were in the water when the child drowned, but there was no lifeguard on duty, police said.
