Girl, 5, struck and killed by car in Raleigh

A 5-year-old Raleigh girl was killed Sunday when police say she was struck by a car that ran off New Hope Road near Hollenden Drive, according to a wreck report.

RALEIGH, N.C. — A 5-year-old Raleigh girl was killed Sunday afternoon when she was struck by a car that ran off New Hope Road near Hollenden Drive, according to a wreck report.

Raleigh police said Sia Elizabeth Byass, 37, lost control of her vehicle and ran off the right side of the road, striking a set of mailboxes, a garbage can and wooden steps outside an apartment where two young girls lived. She struck Nadia Imania Hines, 5, of 4916-B North New Hope Road, killing her.

Another child, 4-year-old Kamiyah Wright, was sitting on the steps outside the apartment. She was injured by debris from the crash and was treated and released at WakeMed in Raleigh.

Byass, of 7009 Woodbend Drive, Apt. H, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, careless and reckless driving and unsafe tires.

New Hope Road was closed in both directions for several hours Sunday afternoon while a crash reconstruction team investigated the scene.

No other information was released.
