RALEIGH, N.C. — Taxi companies and ride-sharing services will be out in force Monday night and early Tuesday to pick up New Year's Eve revelers.

"We definitely encourage our drivers to be on the road and out there to service the customers. We definitely get a lot of calls," said Brian Schimmel, assistant operations manager for Taxi Taxi in Raleigh.

"It'll probably be almost back to back – picking up and dropping off," Lyft driver Peggy Davis of the New Year's Eve business.

Taxis in Raleigh are regulated much more than the vehicles used in ride-sharing apps. They also have set rates for fares, so they can't raise the prices for special occasions, like New Year's Eve.

Lyft and Uber, on the other hand, will be raising rates throughout the night. The two services said riders can expect surge pricing, but they say riders won't be surprised.

"When Prime Time is in effect, riders are alerted and required to confirm they accept the multiplier before requesting a ride," Lyft officials said in a statement.

"Riders agree to a fare in advance that takes into account all the factors that typically affect the price of a trip, including demand for rides at any given time, the number of drivers nearby, traffic [and] the length of the journey," Uber officials said in a statement.

Schimmel said stable pricing is only one advantage his taxis can offer riders.

"We try to compete with our service and our ability to get to you faster and bring you where you need to be," he said. "We have cameras in all of our vehicles to make sure the rides are safe and people are taken care of."
