RALEIGH, N.C. — Oil prices dropped significantly Monday morning due to fears of the coronavirus worldwide, and the Triangle is seeing lower gas prices as a result.
CNN Business reports that U.S. oil prices crashed 34% as coronavirus worries impact the global market and the demand for oil.

Gas prices at various stations in Wake Forest and Zebulon were under $2 Monday morning, and in Raleigh, gas was $2.19 at Exxon at 1709 Lake Wheeler Road and at Shell at 1637 S. Saunders St.

At Costco on Wake Forest Road in Raleigh, gas was as low as $1.99.

Gas prices in our area haven't been under $2 since 2004, experts say.

Experts expect the fuel costs to be low for the next several months. It's good for consumers, but not for the economy.

Investors usually welcome lower energy costs for businesses and consumers, CNN reports, but the abrupt plunge amid anxiety over the coronavirus rattled markets.

Companies have been hit by travel and other controls that are spreading worldwide as the global number of coronavirus infections rose past 110,000 worldwide.
