RED OAK, N.C. — Homes were being evacuated Monday near the Dortches community in Nash County after a truck carrying natural gas crashed in the area.

According to the Nash County Sheriff's Office, a tanker for LP was headed south on N.C. Highway 43 near Halifax Road when it ran off the road and tipped over on its side. Gas was leaking from the truck.

Just before 10 a.m., residents of 30 to 40 homes were asked to leave because of the threat of an explosion. The residents were asked to stay away until the North Carolina State Highway Patrol finishes an investigation into how the crash happened.

LP officials quickly blocked the leak, and the risk of explosion was mitigated. A spokesperson for the Nash County sheriff’s office says the driver did not have any serious injuries.

According to officials, N.C. 43 was blocked at Halifax Road, and drivers are asked to avoid the area.
