CARY, N.C. — A building at East Cary Middle School was evacuated Thursday afternoon after several people were sickened by a carbon monoxide leak.

A spokesman with the Wake County Public School System said four staff members were taken to a nearby hospital while 10 students and several other adults were treated at the scene.

The leak happened shortly before noon at Building 100 on the campus. Officials said they were alerted by a carbon monoxide detector, but the cause of the leak remains under investigation.

"You always get that panicked feeling whenever the school calls you, but it sounds like they took care of the problem well and everybody is fine," parent Mary Ketterhagen said.
