Wednesday is “awfully cold,” meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said, with a high-pressure system funneling cool air from Canada.

Temperatures were hovering around 30 degrees across central North Carolina in the morning, and the high is expected to be 41 degrees.

The normal high for early March is 60 degrees, Gardner said.

“This cold air has taken over the entire country east of the Rockies,” Gardner said.

The low Wednesday night will be 23 degrees.

Thursday and Friday will be in the mid-40s and low 50s.

The high-pressure system is also keeping the area dry. Once it moves out, moisture will come through.

That will lead to some rain Friday through Sunday, but temperatures will be warmer, Gardner said.
