RALEIGH, N.C. — Persistent rain will continue across central North Carolina on Monday, but it shouldn't affect the Triangle until later this evening, according to WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner.

Gardner said the morning will be dry but that rain could be "on and off again" in the Triangle starting around noon. While some bands of heavy rain are possible in that time, they will be brief and scattered, she said. The flood risk for central North Carolina on Monday is low, according to Gardner, and any rain that will cause risk spots on roads will come later tonight.

It's still a good idea to bring an umbrella to work, especially if you plan to leave for lunch. Monday will be warm and muggy, with a high in the mid 80s.

A statement released by Wake County Public Schools on Sunday reminded students and parents that school buses may be late on Monday morning as drivers navigate wet roads.

The best chance for heavy rain in the Triangle comes late Monday, after 10 p.m., when stronger showers are expected to move through. Lightning and thunder are not likely to come with the showers, Gardner said.

According to Gardner, the original forecast reported last week calling for several days of rain has improved.

"It's not going to be a completely dry week, but we do have some days that will be drier than others," Gardner said.

Tuesday will be a cloudy but mostly dry day in the Triangle, giving us a break from days of rain.

"Tuesday is looking pretty good," Gardner said.

According to Gardner, the rain is likely to return for Wednesday and Thursday, but Friday also looks dry.

7-Day Forecast

It will be a milder week, with highs in the low 80s and upper 70s through Friday.
