The North Carolina Gang Investigators Association welcomed more than 400 people to its annual gang convention in Durham Tuesday.

Law enforcement officers from federal, state and local agencies in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia gathered to compare notes about recognizing and thwarting gang activity.

"Gang members are going to travel. We have four major interstates that run through the state of North Carolina, and we have to have pretty much a standard across our industry," said Capt. Mark Bridgeman, president of the association.

He noted that at past conferences, officers comparing notes have been able to close cases.
