Gang Links Cited in Durham School Melee

Posted Updated

DURHAM, N.C. — Gang activity played a role in fights that broke out at Northern High School while students waited outside during a bomb scare, Durham County sheriff's deputies said Friday.

The gang aspect is in addition to an argument over a girl that investigators had earlier identified as a cause, officials said.

The fights happened Monday morning.

Hundreds of Northern High students had gathered on the school's football field after school was evacuated because of a bomb threat.

One student was injured and had to be taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. Eight other students were charged with disorderly conduct.

On Tuesday morning, authorities also arrested Eric Wiggins, 17, at the school and charged him with assault inflicting serious injury.

Authorities initially had been skeptical about a gang aspect to the fights, but investigation showed that was a factor, they said
