FX's 'Atlanta' gets third season

ATLANTA -- FX has given Donald Glover a third season of his award-winning comedy "Atlanta."

The quirky show, which recently concluded its second season and revolves around up-and-coming rapper Paper Boi (Bryan Tyree Henry) and his manager Earn (Glover), doesn't pull in huge ratings. Its overnight ratings for season two averaged around 700,000 viewers. But it's a program that critics have lathered with praise and fans obsess over each episode.

"'Atlanta's' phenomenal, achieving and exceeding what few television series have done," said Nick Grad, who runs original programming for FX. "Donald and his collaborators elevated the series to even greater heights, building on the enormous success of their award-winning first season. We're grateful to the producers and our extraordinary cast and crew for achieving this level of excellence, and we share the excitement with our audience about the third season knowing they will continue to take us to unexpected and thrilling places."

It took more than a year for season two to come about because of Glover's crazy schedule, including his music as Childish Gambino ("This is America") and his film work like "Solo." It's unclear when season three will start production but hopefully it will air in calendar year 2019.

The first season of "Atlanta" won two Emmy Award and two Golden Globe Awards as well as trophies from AFI, Peabody, PGA, WGA, TCA, NAACP and Critics' Choice Awards.

The show is shot in Atlanta and provides an authentic look at grittier parts of the city not regularly featured in many other Atlanta-based shows such as "Real Housewives."
