DURHAM, N.C. — The Blue Devils were the last across the stage Sunday as the Class of 2016 from area colleges and universities stepped out into the next stage of their lives.
At the main commencement ceremony in Wallace Wade Stadium, Duke University graduates, their families and friends heard from head men's basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The procession of candidates began at 9 a.m. with the ceremony and Krzyzewski's address following at 9:30 a.m.

By about 11, thousands of newly christened Duke alumni will be headed to brunch and photos.

Many Duke departments host gatherings and diploma ceremonies in the afternoon.

Sunday capped two weeks of commencement chaos marking both an end and a beginning for students from colleges and universities big and small.

On Saturday, Campbell, St. Augstine's and North Carolina Central universities, and a record class from Wake County Technical Community College got their diplomas.
