MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. — A funeral service for the Wayne County Sheriff's deputy who was killed Monday morning while serving an involuntary commitment order in Dudley will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the University of Mount Olive's Kornegay Arena.

Sgt. Matthew Fishman died at 38 years old and leaves behind a wife and two children. He served for the Wayne County Sheriff's Office for 12 years.

Dave Fishman, his father and pastor at a Goldsboro church, said immediately after his funeral service there will be a processional to Wayne Memorial Park for a burial.

"Thank you for your prayers! As I've mentioned to some already, I do not understand why this has happened but I do have faith in the one who does," his father wrote publicly on his Facebook page.

Dave Fishman thanked the community for their love and support.

"Since this past Monday, life for us has been a whirlwind of activity, decisions, along with sobbing and sharing of memories," he said. "Your love and prayers are precious, needed and appreciated by our family."
