Funeral Arrangements Set for Former Wake Sheriff

Wake County will lower all North Carolina flags at county buildings to half-staff in honor of former Sheriff John Baker Jr., who died Wednesday, officials said.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Funeral arrangements have been set for former Wake County Sheriff John Baker, who died Wednesday after from an undisclosed medical condition.

A viewing and family visitation is set for 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Southeast Raleigh High School, 2600 Rock Quarry Road. A wake will be held from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by another viewing and family visitation from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Baker's funeral will be Monday at 11 a.m. at St. Matthews AME Church at 1629 Bennett St. And his entombment will be at Carolina Biblical Gardens on Creech Road in Garner.

Baker, 72, served as sheriff from 1978 to 2002.

All North Carolina flags at Wake County buildings will also fly at half-staff until noon Thursday in Baker's honor.
