Friends remember teen killed in Raleigh hit-and-run

Justice Smith, 16, an 11th-grader at Wake Forest High School, was hit by a car as she crossed the road at Water Oak Drive shortly before 10 p.m on Jan. 16.

The teen's former step team members are now working together to help Smith's family by creating t-shirts in her memory. The proceeds will be donated to her family. 

"She always told me how creative I was, and I was supposed to make her a t-shirt right before it happened, and that's what hurt me the most," said Menauzjah Grainger, Smith's former teammate. 

Wearing and selling the shirts, stepping, and being around one another are helping the teens cope with their loss. 

"She was just a great person," said Emily Thomas. "She would help anybody out, no matter what the situation was."

Smith's funeral is Feb. 1 at Wake Forest United Methodist Church. 

William Creamont Beary, 36, of Babbling Brook Drive in Raleigh, was arrested at his residence and charged with felony hit and run involving death or serious injury in this case. He was held on a $75,000 bond.
