Friday, Saturday nights will see freeze

The first freeze of the season, an effectively killing freeze is forecast for Friday night.

Turn the heat on, and pull out your warmest jacket. The warm weather is officially gone.

After a bright, sunny day that saw temperatures reach for the 60-degree mark, the chill sets in as darkness falls.

"Everybody should see freezing temperatures tonight," Maze said.

The Raleigh Rescue mission put out a white flag Friday night, meaning the shelter will not turn anyone away because of the cold. The Durham Rescue Mission made the same promise, adding beds and cots.

The cold didn't keep away football fans at many Triangle high schools. But the stadiums were full of thick coats, hats, scarves and blankets.

"I have three layers on the top, and then I have a blanket, and I'm wearing two pairs of socks right now," student Maggie Clark said. "It's really not enough."

The players and spectators weren't the only people who were chilly.

"If you can't feel the foot you're holding, then it's really hard to hold onto it." cheerleader Peyton Lawson said. "It is so cold."

The low temperature will drop to 29 degrees early Saturday morning. Even with the sun high in the sky, Saturday will be chilly. Temperatures are not likely to get out of the 40s before dipping below freezing again leading into Sunday. The normal low for this time of year is 42 degrees.

The Raleigh Veterans Day Parade will kick off with cold air but sunny skies on Saturday morning. The temperature at the parade's 9 a.m. start time will be around 34 degrees, and the air will warm to the low 40s by noon.
