Riegelwood, N.C. — A CSX freight train carrying ethanol derailed in East Arcadia near Riegelwood on Saturday morning.
The train was traveling from Hamlet to Wilmington when it hit an engine parked in the siding area that was waiting to pass, CSX spokesman Garrick Francis said.
Up to 11 of the mixed freight train’s approximately 138 cars derailed.
A few people on board the engine were transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Local officials assessed the damage and checked for spills.
