Registration closes Wednesday, May 18, for a free summer camp series with a focus on science education for children in underserved communities.
For the 14th year, Morehead Planetarium and Science Center partnered with GlaxoSmithKline to offer GSK Science in the Summer, a free camp program at nearly 50 libraries and community centers in 11 North Carolina counties. Organizers work each year to bring the STEM-oriented camps to underserved and historically excluded areas.
Parents need to register online for the week-long, half-day camps, which are completely free to families with children in second through eighth grades.

Organizers call the camps, meant to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, hands-on and immersive.

The theme for 2022 is “Be A Biologist: Discover the World Around You!”

According to the camp website, "students will explore the unique biological systems of life forms from the past to the present and from the deepest oceans to their backyards here in North Carolina. GSK Science in the Summer encourages students to love science by engaging in scientific investigations, model-making, and interactive games led by local educators."

Campers in eight counties (Chatham, Durham, Franklin, Granville, Orange, Johnston, Vance and Wake) will also learn about science over 10 days during the school year through an afterschool partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs.
