Franklinton teacher surprised with $5,000 check in classroom
A Franklinton teacher started off her work week with a pleasant surprise when she was awarded a $5,000 grant for innovative technology.

Franklinton Middle School teacher Jerri Terry received the award from CenturyLink during class on Monday after submitting a proposal for the creation of a technology space, called the Center for Innovation, at the school.
The center will include a virtual reality kit, which will allow students to travel the world from the classroom; a makerspace kit station, which will give students a hands-on approach to learning and focus on problem solving; and a Sphero station, which will be targeted toward students interested in computer programming and allow them to program a robot to complete various tasks.
“The motivation for this project stems from my personal journey to create innovative lessons for my students,” Terry said. “Student engagement can be a difficult task in middle school, and my underlying goal is to spark their interests and challenge their skills.”
Terry was one of 18 teachers in the state to receive a grant funded by the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation's Teachers and Technology program, which provides money to help fund projects that advance student success through innovate use of technology.
The total amount of grants awarded to teachers totaled more than $75,000.
