LOUISBURG, N.C. — Franklin County Sheriff Pat Green resigned Sunday after more than 20 years at the sheriff's office and four years as sheriff, a county attorney said.

He cited "health and personal matters" as the reasons for his resignation.

Chief Deputy Elliott Pinnell will take over the sheriff's duties until the county commission appoints a replacement.

Green was elected sheriff in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.
