WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — In the first five weeks of school, four firearms and three BB guns were found at schools, according to Winston-Salem/Forsyth County superintendent Tricia McManus.
Most recently, on Thursday, a tip into the sheriff’s office led school leaders to a gun in a backpack at Mount Tabor High School, WXII reports.

“Although three of the four that have been found caused no harm, they could have,” McManus said.

The superintendent said any student that brings a gun onto a school campus is immediately suspended for 365 days, per state and federal law.

McManus also said in the first four weeks of school there have been 100 fights on high school and middle school campuses.

The district is working with a security consultant to identify ways to make improvements.
