ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Four Halifax County men have been charged with murder after a traffic stop early Monday led to the discovery of a dead man in the trunk of a vehicle, authorities said.

A Roanoke Rapids police officer pulled over the speeding car at about 1 a.m. near the intersection of U.S. Highway 158 and Georgia Avenue, police said, and the body of Trevon Quantavius Fields, 23, of Roanoke Rapids, was found during a search. He had been shot.

"It startled him. You’re not sure what’s going to happen. You open the trunk there’s somebody there," Roanoke Rapids Police Chief Bobby Martin said. "That’s when he started trying to do what he thought would be life-saving measures, but unfortunately, the young man was already deceased."

Ralik Robinson, 22, Trevathann Myquan Shearin, 20, and Shantron Avondre Person, 20, all of Roanoke Rapids, and Deluntae Jaequon Squire, 23, of Halifax, were arrested and were being held without bond in the Halifax County jail.

Martin said officers recovered four guns in the car.

No other details, such as a possible motive for the shooting, were released.
