LAUREL HILL, N.C. — A Fort Bragg soldier was charged with attempted murder after a June 9 shooting, according to the Scotland County Sheriff's Office.

Eric Jerrod Davis, 24, of Fort Bragg, was charged with one count of attempted first-degree murder and one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling.

On June 9 around 3 a.m., deputies responded to a shooting at a home at 4643 Old Wire Road.

According to officials, Davis drove to the home in his own car. He was armed with a shot gun and wearing his military-issued ballistic gear, which included his ballistic vest.

Officials said Davis allegedly opened fire on one victim, intending to kill them. Officers did not release the victim's name.

"He wasn't successful in his several attempts to shoot that victim," said Capt. Jessica Sadovnikov, with the Scotland County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said several bystanders were in the home, and one returned fire, causing Davis to retreat.

"In the process of him opening fire, another innocent bystander opened fire on him and in an act of self-defense," Sadovnikov said.

Davis was shot in the leg.

Officials said Davis fled the scene but was involved in a crash. He was transported to a hospital where he remains in critical, unstable condition, officers said. According to the Scotland County Sheriff's Office, Davis will be arrested if he is released from the hospital.

Davis was reportedly an active duty soldier and a member of the 44th Medical Brigade at Fort Bragg.
