A Fort Bragg paratrooper died during a training accident at Fort Stewart on Wednesday, officials said.

FORT STEWART, GA. — A Fort Bragg paratrooper died during a training accident at Fort Stewart on Wednesday, officials said.

Pfc. Jean Cruz De Leon's parachute malfunctioned while participating in an airborne training operation, officials said. The incident is under investigation.

De Leon, 20, of Marrero, La., was a a grenadier and radio-transmitter operator assigned to Alpha Company, 1st Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

"Cruz was a great soldier, always made everyone laugh when everyone was down, constantly raising the team’s morale. He consistently strived to better himself and was always there for his battle buddies,” Spc. Brandon Arnold, Weapons Squad Team leader, said in a statement.

De Leon enlisted in the Army in May 2019 and was assigned to Fort Bragg in October 2019.
