FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A paratrooper assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg died Thursday after a car wreck on Elliott Ray Road in Spring Lake, Army officials said Friday.

Pfc. Antonio E. Williams, 24, of Fayetteville, was a motor transport operator with the 122nd Aviation Support Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

A military spokeswoman said that Spring Lake police were still investigating the wreck and it wasn't clear if it was weather related.

Williams' wife, Erika, is also a soldier and is traveling back from serving in Afghanistan. He is also survived by his parents, Daphne and Eric Faison, of Clayton.

Williams joined the Army in March.

His friends remembered him as an outstanding and charismatic soldier.

"Whenever I needed help with anything, I could rely on Williams. He was always looking for ways to help," Pfc. Crystal Higgins said.

Williams received the Army Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
