FORT BRAGG, N.C. — Col. Phillip D. Sounia, garrison commander at Fort Bragg, was relieved of his command Friday. The post announced the move Monday afternoon.

Justin Mitchell, Fort Bragg’s deputy garrison commander, will serve as the acting garrison manager until a replacement for Sounia assumes command.

The decision was made by Lt. Gen. Douglas Gabram, commander of Installation Management Command, and Lt. Gen. Michael E. Kurilla, XVIII Airborne Corps commander, due to loss of trust and confidence in Sounia's abilities to command.

Sounia enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1989 and has served in Germany, Iraq, Hungary, Bulgaria, Afghanistan and the Republic of Georgia. He has a Ph.D. in public policy from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
