Fort Bragg, N.C. — An Army captain with the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg was found guilty Thursday of kidnapping, sexually assaulting and beating a female officer nearly two years ago.
Capt. Richard Camacho was found guilty of 11 of 18 charges stemming from the November 2012 crimes, which happened at a home in Bunnlevel in Harnett County.
Camacho was sentenced to two years in a military prison and will receive a dishonorable discharge after his release, The Fayetteville Observer reported Friday evening. He will also lose his pay and benefits.
Camacho's defense attorneys said the woman, who was also with the 82nd Airborne, made up the story to keep from getting in trouble for an alleged affair and that she wanted to ruin Camacho's career.
But prosecutors say he ripped off her shirt and inappropriately touched her, hit her in the head and used indecent language – all violations of military code of conduct.
