RALEIGH — A former Wake County school teacher admitted Wednesday that she had sex with one of her students.
Betty Mackie pleaded guilty to having sex two years ago with a 13-year-old student. Mackie was a teacher at Ligon Middle School at the time of the incident.
With her husband by her side, the former teacher listened as the prosecutor described the relationship, saying that "sexual activity between them included penetration."
Mackie's lawyer says his client has a history of mental illness and is being treated for manic depression. He says that her mental health contributed to the relationship.
But, he added, that does not diminish the seriousness of the crime.
Mackie's guilty plea is part of an agreement with prosecutors. As a result, she will not be charged with anything else in this case.
Since this charge is a felony, the judge could send Mackie to jail for at least a year, when she is sentenced in July.
Mackie resigned from Broughton in April.
