LUMBERTON, N.C. — A man suspected of a hit-and-run in Lumberton on Monday night was cornered by police outside a local restaurant, where he fired a gun at officers before being taken into custody, police said Tuesday.

No one was hurt during the incident, and officers didn't return fire, police said.

The incident began with a hit-and-run crash in the parking lot of a Walmart at 5070 Fayetteville Road, police said.

Witnesses reported that a driver of a burgundy SUV that was involved in the hit-and-run had pointed a gun at several people in the vicinity of Fayetteville Road and Jackson Court, which is a block or so from the Walmart.

An officer found a burgundy Chevrolet Blazer abandoned in the road, and a witness said the driver went to the Texas Steakhouse, at 5093 Fayetteville Road.

Texas Steakhouse workers said the man used to work at the restaurant but was no longer allowed there. They said he made it all the way back to the kitchen area, where he was recognized by the assistant manager.

The assistant manager asked the man to leave and walked him to the front door. But police were outside waiting for him, and shots were fired.

The assistant manager then locked the front door to keep all employees and customers safe inside.

"By what we were told, they were shooting outside, so they told us to stay in," Texas Steakhouse worker Amber Prevatte said. "It was a little scary, but not at first because [the armed man was] a familiar face. But once we found out what was going on, it was more shocking, like we couldn’t believe this was happening."

Police said two officers confronted the man outside, near the rear of the restaurant, but he refused to put up his hands and instead ran to the fenced area where the restaurant's trash bins were located. The man fired at the officers and then ran through an open gate, police said.

Police K-9s were able to track the man, and he was taken into custody a short time later, police said. Officers also found a gun believed to have been used in the incident.

Brian T. Campbell, 31, of 941 U.S. Highway 74 West in Lumberton, has been charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer with a firearm, three counts of assault by pointing a gun and one count each of possession of a firearm by a felon, discharging a firearm in the city limits and driving while impaired.

He was being held in the Robeson County Detention Center under $500,000 bond.
