RALEIGH, N.C. — Police have arrested a former teacher at Beaverdam Elementary School in Raleigh on charges that he engaged in inappropriate conduct with students.

Peter Cunningham Moody, 39, of 101 Tortola Place in Knightdale, was charged with four counts of indecent liberties with a minor and was being held at the Wake County jail under $200,000 bond.

Arrest warrants state the incidents allegedly occurred between August 2018 and June and involved at least two youths.

A Wake County prosecutor said during a Wednesday court hearing that Moody rubbed his genitals on students and told them he was going to "hook up" with them when they turned 18.

It was not immediately clear if the students involved were in classes taught by Moody.

According to the Wake County Public School System, Moody was hired in August 2017 and resigned two years later, on Aug. 13. He taught fifth-grade students at the school, officials said.

The school's principal sent a letter home to parents recently to inform them about the situation.

"This is disheartening news for the Beaverdam community," Principal Marion Evans wrote. "I understand that students and families will experience a wide range of emotions. The trust you place in your teachers is sacred, and we do not and will not tolerate any violation of that trust."

Evans told parents that the school district learned of the allegations in August, and administrators then went to police.

It was not clear how the incidents were discovered.

Parent Avelia Sanchez told WRAL News Wednesday that her daughter was in Moody's class before he left.
"I need more information," she said. "I spoke with the secretary (but) she didn't let me know more."

The allegations sparked an internal school district investigation, which preceded Moody's resignation before students returned for the fall semester.

Beaverdam Elementary is a fairly new Wake County public school, having opened in 2016.
