RALEIGH, N.C. — Wake County District Attorney Lorrin Freeman said Monday she isn't pursuing criminal charges against former Raleigh City Council member Saige Martin, who resigned last month amid allegations of sexual assault and sexual misconduct.

Martin, who represented District D on the council, stepped down after four current or former North Carolina State University students accused him of sexual assault. Martin worked as a teaching assistant at the university before he was elected last fall.

"Since he held a position that was so public, I think it’s important that the public have some idea and ultimately know that this is something that is viable to move forward or not, or whether he could be exonerated," she said last month.

Freeman said Monday that Martin's accusers "have not provided sufficient information to proceed."

"We understand that that is difficult and a very personal decision that, at the end of the day, we will respect," she said.

Juni Cuevas, the only accuser who agreed to be publicly identified, maintained he didn't want to pursue a criminal case.

"I feel that I’ve done my part in exposing him for the vile human being that he is," Cuevas said in a statement.

Martin declined to comment on Freeman's decision.

Meanwhile, the City Council is expected to name someone to fill the remainder of Martin's two-year term on Tuesday.

More than 50 people applies for the position, and the City Council picked five to take part in an online forum on Sunday, where they answered questions on issues including how Raleigh can best battle the coronavirus pandemic.
