SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. — A former Moore County deputy who worked in Iraq as a defense contractor was found dead Monday, authorities said.

Authorities believe Daniel H. Scott, 48, died of natural causes, but an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Scott worked with the Moore County Sheriff's Department for three years. He had worked with Dyncorp for the past year and a half training Iraqi police.

His widow, Tilly Scott, said he signed on for additional time in Iraq after his first year ended because he wanted to finish the training program.

"He was a very patriotic person," Tilly Scott said, adding that he liked the Iraqi people and was trying to make a difference in that country.

She said she knew something was wrong when he didn't answer her phone calls earlier in the week.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Brownson Memorial Presyterian Church, 330 S. May St., in Southern Pines.
