Former food truck opening restaurant at American Tobacco Campus

Boricua Soul, formerly a pop-up business and food truck, will open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant at the American Tobacco Campus this fall.

DURHAM, N.C. — Former food truck and pop-up business Boricua Soul will open its first brick-and-mortar restaurant at the American Tobacco Campus this fall.

The intimate, 1,800 square-foot eatery is expected to open in August in the Crowe Lobby at 318 Blackwell Street. It will feature outdoor seating that overlooks the ATC lawn.

Boricua, a concept from Toriano and Serena Fredericks, is known for its Puerto Rican dishes enhanced with West African, Native Indian and European flavors. Slow-cooked pork, baked mac-and-cheese, empanadas and collards are some Boricua Soul staples, along with desserts like the sweet potato cheesecake empanada.

Poetry, music and other live performances will be a regular occurrence at Boricua, which will be open for lunch and dinner.

Serena Fredericks called the new space comfortable and a place for family and friends to gather. "I believe we’re creating a restaurant that will become a home for repeat customers," she said.

According ATC officials, Boricua is just one restaurant in a series of announcements coming to the mixed-use campus owned by Capitol Broadcasting Company.

The campus is home to 4,000 daily workers and residents and more than 1.3 million annual visitors, according to Adam Klein, chief strategist for CBC.
