RALEIGH, N.C.Allan Head, the former executive director of the North Carolina Bar Association, died Friday at the age of 73, the NCBA said Saturday night.

He joined the NCBA as executive secretary in 1973 and served as executive director from 1981 until 2016.

“Allan Head had a profound impact on the legal profession in North Carolina,” said NCBA President Caryn McNeill. “The success of the North Carolina Bar Association is directly attributable to his vision and the degree to which he sincerely cared about our members and staff."

A native of Atlanta, Head was a 1966 graduate of Wake Forest University and a 1969 graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Law.

After law school he served four years as a lawyer assigned to the U.S. Army Security Agency in Kassel and Augsburg, Germany.

“Allan was a leader, a mentor to generations of attorneys, and a friend to all who met him,” said NCBA Executive Director Jason Hensley. “He left this world a better place than he found it. As an Association we are deeply saddened by his passing and profoundly grateful for his dedication, his care for others and his legacy that continues forward in the work of the NCBA.”
