CHADBOURN, N.C. — A former Chadbourn chief of police faces 88 felony charges after he was indicted in a scheme to steal guns from evidence and resell them.
WECT News first reported in March that Chadbourn Police Chief Anthony Spivey had been placed on administrative leave while the investigation played out.

Brunswick County District Attorney Jon David announced the charges, which include embezzlement of state property, altering or destroying evidence, obstruction of justice, trafficking in opium, obtaining a controlled substance by misrepresentation, obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and obtaining property by false pretense, in a press release on Wednesday.

The indictments allege that Spivey stole firearms from the police department evidence locker and sold them "to friends, family members, and acquaintances," David said in a statement.

While some of the missing firearms have been recovered, "a large number" remain unaccounted for, according to David. He asked that anyone with information regarding the sale, purchase or possession of a firearm involving Spivey call the Coastal District of the State Bureau of Investigation at 910-346-2121.

WECT reported that Spivey had been police chief since 2018. He resigned from that role on April 6.
Arrest warrants obtained by WECT following Spivey’s initial arrest allege he repeatedly raided the police department’s evidence locker and stole thousands of dollars in cash, hundreds of narcotics pills, and firearms during most of his tenure as police chief.

The warrants state all of the items stolen from the evidence room were relevant to criminal offenses.
