RALEIGH, N.C. — A former Central Prison staff member has been sentenced to at least 4½ years in prison for embezzling from the state.

Michael Scott Ragan, 50, was convicted last week of embezzlement of at least $100,000 and was sentenced to 54 months to 77 months in prison, according to court records.

Ragan was ordered to pay $266,557 in restitution to the state, including $15,000 up front.

Investigators determined he misappropriated money from the prison over nearly eight years, using it to buy everything from Christmas decorations to jewelry, appliances and furniture..

He lost his job as Central Prison's business manager in April 2020 and was arrested in March.
