RALEIGH, N.C. — A judge in Wake County on Monday refused to lower bond for a former Broughton High School teacher accused of having sex with a 17-year-old student.

Ronald Lee Chewning, 25, of 5323 Hidden Dove Lane, #105, Raleigh, was arrested Friday on a charge of sex offense with a student.

An arrest warrant indicates the alleged crime happened sometime between Dec. 1 and Feb. 1 although it does not say where. A spokesman for Raleigh police, however, said the school system reported the case to police.

Despite age, North Carolina state law prohibits teachers from having sexual relationships with students.

If convicted of the charge, Chewning could face up to 47 months in prison.

He was hired last year to work in career and technical education, and he resigned Feb. 3, according to Lisa Luten, a spokeswoman for the Wake County Public School System.

Luten said that, in addition to cooperating with Raleigh police, the district is conducting an internal investigation.

Chewning, meanwhile, remained jailed under a $50,000 secured bond Monday afternoon.
