RALEIGH, N.C. — A former teacher at Broughton High School has been charged with a sex crime involving a student, Wake County Public School System officials confirmed Saturday.

Ronald Lee Chewning, 25, of 5323 Hidden Dove Lane, #105, Raleigh, is charged with sex offense with a student. He was arrested on Greens Dairy Road in Raleigh.

Lisa Luten, a spokeswoman for the school system, said Chewning resigned from his position on Feb 3, prior to his arrest.

"All our staff uphold an obligation to report any possible information we may have about this charge. We have and will continue to fully comply with that obligation," Luten said in a statement. "We are currently conducting an internal investigation of the incident, along with cooperating fully with Raleigh Police Department's investigation."

Chewning was a career and technical education teacher at the downtown Raleigh school, which is home to more than 2,000 students.

"Please know that we take the safety of students very seriously. Guidance counselors are available to students who need support," Luten said.
