Follow the Truth: Did Larry Demery tell the truth about the murder of Michael Jordan's dad?

At the beginning of our investigation into the case of who killed Michael Jordan's dad, James, I wrote Larry Demery a letter in prison asking him for an interview. I didn’t hear back, which was not a surprise since he’s basically talked to no one since he went to prison. His father has since passed away, but I reached out to his mother, Virginia, his girlfriend at the time, Angela, and his adult daughter, Taylor. Angela was the only one who responded, and she declined our request for an interview.

Larry’s silence, now and throughout the past 27 years, has made him into a mysterious persona, an enigma, a man with secrets, secrets he may take to his grave. So, we can only talk to people who knew him to try and understand his motivation for testifying against Daniel Green.

The only thing that makes sense, the only thing that has ever made sense, is that Larry was afraid. But afraid of who or what? Afraid of the investigators, afraid of the death penalty or afraid of other outside forces that we are not privy to? In my opinion, he did what he did in order not only to protect himself, but possibly to protect his family. Was he afraid to bring shame on his family, shame on the Lumbee community, or was he afraid because he botched a drug deal and killed an innocent man? We may never know.

Follow the Truth: The trial of Daniel Andre Green

I know there are a lot of conspiracy theories in this case, and we’ve talked about them, debunked most of them, but what’s very clear is that Larry didn’t feel like he had a choice but to cooperate with the state. There are so many roads you could go down here, but there’s really only one person who knows whether or not he told the truth, and that’s Larry. And so, if Larry lied on the stand as Daniel claims and sent an innocent man to prison for life, that’s a pretty big burden to carry for all these years, And maybe, just maybe, there’s a part of Larry that wants to set the record straight.
